FAQ

Q: What is the TLC program and how does it work?

A: Our philosophy is to provide the horse with everything it needs on a daily basis and to support the Performance horse in its entirety without adding unnecessary calories.  Our base, or foundation products are the Performance Horse Max or Performance Plus, depending on if you want a supplement with, or without, joint support. The other products are used when the horse has an existing issue that you want to address or if you have a horse that is prone to developing a specific issue. Example: an older horse in competition will need a different support program than a growing foal or yearling.

Q:  Why are your products different from others that are available?

A:  Our products are result-oriented and intended to be used for specific needs.  For instance, many people will use joint supplements as an "all encompassing approach" for a horse with Navicular bone deterioration.  However, Navicular bone deterioration is just that.  It's a bone issue, so joint supplements are not an appropriate or effective course of rehabilitation for these horses.  It is important to choose the correct product to match the set of circumstances or goals you are looking for.  Our staff are great at making product recommendations based on your specific situation because, being a family owned business, you have the advantage of speaking to the owners and getting the support of knowledgeable experts that will help you make the best decision between every product in our lineup, should you need it.

Q:  Once I start my horse on Equi-Bone, do I need to feed it forever?

A:  When dealing with degenerative bone issues that were a result of improper bone remodeling it is best to use Equi-Bone at the maintenance level (1 scoop, 2 times daily) in order to maintain healthy bone conditions.  Those which have rehabilitated successfully from an acute injury, such as a fracture may be able to switch to either Performance Plus or Performance Horse Max. However, feeding the maintenance amount afterward rehabilitation may help promote stronger bone conditions.

Q:  Why should I add apple cider vinegar to the grain?  What is this for?

A:  Apple cider vinegar is given to help with mineral absorption.  We feed apple cider vinegar at the rate of 1 ounce, 2 times daily.

Q:  When giving Equi-Bone or Performance Plus can I use the grain I am currently using or do I need to change the grain?

A:  In most cases we suggest that you use a simple diet grain like clean oats, stabilized rice bran (or beet pulp without molasses for easy keepers/insulin resistant horses).  This is especially important for horses on a commercial grain with a high amount of macrominerals (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, etc...) as it may interfere with the nutrient profile with which we have designed our product(s) to work.

However, if you are giving a commercial feed and only using a small amount per day, then the amount of influence is very little, and you may be just fine to continue.

Q:  When will I notice a change in my horse after I start feeding your products?

A:  This varies.  Depending on your situation it may be a few hours to a few weeks.  The more acute your situation, the quicker you should see results. (i.e. if you have a problem, like laminitis that started a week ago you may be able to notice an improvement within a few hours.  On the other hand if you have an issue that has been ongoing for several years you may need to be more patient and realize that situations like these are going to take more time).

Q:  What type of salt block do you suggest?

A:  We recommend a white salt block be made readily available so the horse may regulate its own salt consumption based on environmental conditions.

Q:  To which horses can I feed Performance Plus?

A:  Performance Plus is a supplement which can be given to all horses.  We give 1/2 scoop daily per 300lbs of bodyweight.  A mature horse should get 1 scoop, 2 times daily and a horse under heavy working conditions may get up to 2 scoops, 2 times daily.

Q:  Can I use joint supplements along with your products?

A:  Yes, all joint supplements are safe to give along with our products.  We typically recommend 5,000-10,000mg daily of MSM/Glucosamine for healthy management.  We recommend up to 20,000mg daily of each for more severe conditions.

Q:  How can I get your products at my local feed store?

A:  Simply let them know that you want them to order and carry the product(s) that you are feeding. But do not accept substitutes... if they won't order it for you, give us a call and we'll be happy to ship that out to you!
